Safari FAQs
Questions we are asked before every safari
Deposits, what the price covers, the vehicles and the best time to come. If your question is not here, ask us directly.
Booking and payment
How do I book a safari?
Send us an enquiry from any safari page or through the tailor-made form. When we accept your booking we issue a confirmation invoice, and that is the point at which the booking is confirmed.
How much is the deposit?
A deposit of 40% per person per trip confirms your booking. If you book within 60 days of departure, the full amount is payable at the time of booking. In peak season, July to December, full payment is required 90 days before your safari departs.
When is the balance due?
The balance is due 30 days before the departure date. Full payment is required earlier for peak-season bookings. Your confirmation invoice shows the dates that apply to you.
What happens if I need to cancel?
Cancellations must be confirmed in writing. If you cancel 60 days or more before departure we retain the deposit. Between 31 and 59 days we retain the deposit or 50% of the total booking cost, whichever is greater. At 30 days or less we retain 100%. We strongly advise taking out cancellation insurance when you book.
Can I change my booking?
Yes, with at least 60 days’ notice. Moving to another trip or transferring your booking to another person costs $200 per person per change. Other amendments carry a $100 administration fee per booking per change. No amendments are possible within 10 days of departure.
On safari
What is included in the price?
All accommodation, transport, sightseeing and meals listed in your itinerary, the services of a guide and all park fees for your trip. Each safari page lists its own inclusions.
What is not included?
International and internal flights unless specified, visa and passport fees, travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, optional activities and personal expenses such as drinks, laundry and tips.
Where do you pick us up?
In Nairobi, from your hotel or the airport. On the coast, from your hotel or resort in Mombasa, Diani, Watamu or Malindi.
Can we add activities such as a balloon safari?
Yes. A hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara and a visit to a Maasai village can both be added. They are optional and priced separately.
Vehicles and guides
What vehicles do you use?
Our own 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers, in a 5-seat and an 8-seat version. Every passenger has a window seat and the pop-top roof gives all-round game viewing. Each vehicle carries a first-aid kit, an HF radio, charging outlets, a cooler box and drinking water.
Can I hire a vehicle and driver-guide only?
Yes. A Land Cruiser with a professional driver-guide costs US$300 per day, including fuel, tolls, taxes and bottled water. Accommodation, park fees and tips are not included.
When to go
When is the best time to visit Kenya?
Kenya is a year-round destination. July to October is best for the Great Migration and dry-season game viewing. November to March is warm and suits a beach stay. April to June is the green season, with fewer visitors and lower rates.
When is the Great Migration in the Masai Mara?
The herds are usually in the Masai Mara from July to October, which is when the Mara River crossings take place.
Before you travel
Do I need travel insurance?
Travel insurance is not included in our prices and we strongly advise arranging it when you book, including cover for cancellation. Our road safaris include emergency air medical evacuation cover.
